600 Hour Curriculum
The course of study to become a licensed massage therapist includes instructional
and clinical experience. Classes are designed to progress from basic to advanced
techniques and to prepare students to become competent and successful massage
practitioners for the general public. The curriculum offered meets requirements
set forth by the Arkansas State Board of Massage Therapy.
Anatomy and Physiology - The detailed study of the structure and function of the human body with particular
attention paid to the musculo-skeletal system and the functions of the various
organs and tissues of the body.
Pathology - The study of disease as observed in the structure and function of the body.
KInesiology - The study of movement that combines the fields of anatomy, physiology, physics
and geometry and relates them to human movement.
Hygiene & Practical Demonstration - The study of the prevention of disease with emphasis on the importance of sanitary
procedures relating to massage therapy. This class will also cover safety procedures
such as first aid and CPR.
Hydrotherapy, Electrotherapy & Heliotherapy - The study of the use of water, light and mechanical devices in conjunction with
massage therapy applications
Health Services Management - The study of marketing, business procedures, law, legal and ethical practices
related to the massage therapy industry.
Ethics - The science or study of Morals, Values, and Principles, including the ideals
of autonomy, benificence and justice. Ethics comprises principles of right and
good conduct.
Client Assessment - Ther collection and interpretation of information provided by the client, the
client's consent advocates and the referring medical professionals as well as
information gathered by the massage practitioner.
Swedish Massage - The art of classic Swedish massage techniques including draping and other procedures
which will insure the client a safe and therapeutic experience. This class is
the basis for all other hands-on styles taught at ACOMT.
Deep Tissue Technique/Sports Massage - The study of human athletic performances and an introduction to injury assessment
through advanced hands-on techniques.
Reflexology - An introduction to this ancient art and science. Foot reflexology will be emphasized
in coursework. This modality can be used as primary therapy or as an adjunct to
other therapies.
Hot Stone Therapy - The use of heated stones to warm the muscles and sedate the nerves. A popular
spa modality, the stones give the therapist tools to work deep into the tissues.
Aromatherapy - An introduction to aromatherapy and its usefulness to massage therapists. The
indications and contraindications of a few common aromatic oils will be studied.
Spa Services – A general introduction to those spa services that can be done under the conditions
of the existing treatment room or as services done at the client's location.
Clinical Internship - Students will be required to to work 50 hours in the intern clinic under the
supervision
of an MTI. This clinical experience trains the students to respond with confidence
to their future clientele.
